It is no coincidence, but rather a reflection of the ancient truth that wherever man is found, the need for spiritual anchoring is born. Faith is not merely a historical construct or a social custom; it is a living response to the most pressing questions carried within every soul. We ask ourselves why we exist, who breathed life into us, and what the true purpose of our journey is. These are questions to which neither pure reason nor modern science can provide a fully satisfying answer. It is for this reason that divine messages were sent to humanity—to address both human nature and the intellect simultaneously.

Islam, as the final message, offers a comprehensive answer to this deep-seated need for meaning. Yet, it presents us with a fundamental question: Does one become a Muslim simply through the influence of their environment, or through conscious knowledge and inner conviction?

Islam teaches us that belief in God is embedded in the very foundations of the human soul. In the Qur’an, Allah reminds humanity of this innate inclination:

“…the nature made by Allah in which He has made men; there is no altering of Allah’s creation.” (30:30)

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) confirmed this principle by stating that every child is born upon fitra—a state of pure, natural openness to the One God. To ensure that man does not lose his way, Allah surrounded the world and our inner selves with countless signs, calling us to use our intellect. It is in this harmony of innate nature and free will that the foundation of our religious responsibility lies.

However, many people experience their faith merely as an inherited family heirloom. They pray and fast only because their parents did so before them. While such faith is not invalid, it is often fragile, having never been tempered by the fire of personal understanding. The Qur’an criticizes this attitude of blind imitation, where people say:

“We found our fathers following a certain religion, and we are guided by their footsteps.” (43:22)

The divine response is awakening: “Even though their fathers had no sense at all and were not guided?” (2:170). The issue is not respect for one’s ancestors, but rather the moment when mechanical repetition replaces living thought. Conscious faith does not fear questions; on the contrary, it views them as essential milestones on the path to certainty. The Qur’an constantly rouses us with appeals such as “Will you not then understand?” or “Do they not then reflect on the Qur’an?”.

At times, we may fear that asking questions is a sign of weakness, but the Qur’an shows us that even the great Prophets sought reassurance for their hearts. The Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) asked his Lord:

“My Lord! Show me how You give life to the dead.” He said: “Do you not believe?” He said: “Yes, but that my heart may be at rest.” (2:260)

Similarly, Musa (Moses) yearned for a deeper experience of the Divine presence. These stories teach us that a sincere question is not a sin, but proof that our faith is alive. True Islam, as emphasized by Imam ‘Abd al-Hamid ibn Badis, is that which a person lives consciously. Faith without reflection weakens, but faith grounded in knowledge becomes an unshakeable light.

Ultimately, true faith can neither be forced nor simply handed down as a legacy. It is a conscious choice that we make again and again, with both our reason and our heart. If faith is our nature, then reflection is what protects it. Let us make it a light that guides us, rather than a habit that binds us. Our journey is best captured by the supplication the Qur’an has left for us:

“Our Lord! Let not our hearts deviate after You have guided us, and grant us from Yourself mercy. Indeed, You are the Bestower.” (3:8)

May Allah grant us a conscious faith, a true certainty, and hearts that shine in His light.

From time immemorial, the human heart has been inscribed with a profound inclination toward faith.
