We praise Him, seek His help and His forgiveness, and seek refuge in Allah from the evil within ourselves and from the consequences of our deeds. Whomever Allah guides, none can lead astray, and whomever He allows to stray, none can guide. I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah alone, without partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad (salla lláhu ʻalayhi wa sallam) is His servant and Messenger.

Allah the Almighty says: “O you who believe, fear Allah and speak words of righteousness. He will rectify your deeds for you and forgive you your sins. Whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has indeed attained a tremendous success.” (Qur’an 33:70–71)

Dear brothers and sisters,

In a few days, we will bid farewell to the passing Hijri year and welcome a new one. This is an occasion that calls for reflection, self-assessment, and sincere contemplation. Days pass swiftly, our lives grow shorter, and our appointed time draws nearer. Every day that departs takes with it a part of our lives and will never return.

Al-Hasan al-Basri (rahimahu lláh) said: “O son of Adam, you are but a collection of days. Whenever a day passes, a part of you passes away.”

As we stand on the threshold of a new Islamic year, we remember one of the greatest events in Islamic history: the blessed Hijrah of the Prophet Muhammad (salla lláhu ʻalayhi wa sallam) from Makkah to Madinah.

The Hijrah was not merely a migration from one city to another. It was a profound school of faith that taught the Muslim Ummah the meaning of trusting in Allah, utilizing all lawful means available, believing firmly in His promise, remaining steadfast during hardships, and adhering unwaveringly to the truth.

Whoever reflects upon the early years of Islam and the persecution, boycott, torture, and suffering endured by the believers, and then observes how Allah transformed their condition only a few years after the Hijrah, will realize that relief comes from Allah at the most difficult moments and that victory is often born from the depths of hardship.

In our time, when trials increase and campaigns aimed at distorting the image of Islam and Muslims continue to multiply, believers must not surrender to despair or discouragement. Rather, they should maintain hope, place their trust in Allah, and continue striving for goodness and righteousness.

The Prophet (salla lláhu ʻalayhi wa sallam) nurtured his Companions upon optimism and confidence in Allah even during the most difficult circumstances. When the Muslims suffered persecution at the hands of the polytheists, he said:

“By Allah, Allah will surely complete this matter until a traveler journeys from Sana’a to Hadramawt fearing none but Allah and the wolf for his sheep; however, you are being impatient.”

The believer knows with certainty that Allah’s promise is true and that the difficulties experienced by the Ummah are temporary, while the Word of Allah remains supreme.

Allah the Almighty says: “And He made the word of those who disbelieved the lowest, while the Word of Allah is the highest. And Allah is Almighty, All-Wise.” (Qur’an 9:40)

One of the greatest lessons of the Hijrah is that trust in Allah does not mean abandoning effort or waiting passively for miracles. The Prophet (salla lláhu ʻalayhi wa sallam) possessed the strongest faith and trust in Allah of all mankind, yet he took every lawful measure available to him.

For years he presented the message of Islam to tribes during the pilgrimage seasons, enduring rejection, ridicule, and hostility. He remained steadfast until Allah prepared supporters for him among the people of Madinah. This led to the Pledge of Al-‘Aqabah and ultimately to the blessed Hijrah.

When the leaders of Quraysh gathered to plot the assassination of the Prophet (salla lláhu ʻalayhi wa sallam), he did not rely merely upon hope and wishes. Rather, he prepared a careful and detailed plan. He selected a trustworthy companion, chose a strategic route, hired a skilled guide, and utilized every permissible means available to ensure the success of his mission and the preservation of the message of Islam.

Some may ask why Allah did not send Al-Buraq to carry the Prophet (salla lláhu ʻalayhi wa sallam) during the Hijrah, just as He had sent it during the Night Journey and Ascension.

The answer is that Allah wanted to teach this Ummah a lasting lesson: victory, success, and establishment upon the earth occur according to the divine laws Allah has placed within His creation. Utilizing lawful means is not contrary to trusting Allah; rather, it is an essential component of true reliance upon Him.

Allah has established universal laws that apply to all people. Among these laws is that success is linked to effort and that negligence leads to failure.

A clear example of this principle is found in the Battle of Uhud. Some of the archers disobeyed the command of the Prophet (salla lláhu ʻalayhi wa sallam) and abandoned their positions. As a result, the course of the battle changed after the Muslims had initially gained the upper hand. Although the Messenger of Allah (salla lláhu ʻalayhi wa sallam) was among them, Allah wanted the Ummah to understand that His laws apply to everyone.

Allah says: “Say: It is from yourselves.” (Qur’an 3:165)

The believer is therefore required to exert every possible effort and then accept Allah’s decree with contentment and trust.

This lesson became evident during the Hijrah itself. Although the Prophet (salla lláhu ʻalayhi wa sallam) had taken every possible precaution, the pursuers reached the entrance of the cave. Abu Bakr (radiya lláhu ʻanhu) said:

“If one of them were to look beneath his feet, he would see us.”

At that moment, after every available means had been exhausted, the perfection of reliance upon Allah became manifest. The Prophet (salla lláhu ʻalayhi wa sallam) replied: “Do not grieve; indeed, Allah is with us.”

This is the balance that every believer must achieve: to work diligently, to strive sincerely, and then to entrust the outcome to Allah.

The patient seeks treatment. The student studies diligently. The employer plans and works hard. The caller to Islam continues inviting people with patience and wisdom. After fulfilling their responsibilities, they leave the results to Allah.

At times, relief may appear delayed and success may seem distant. Satan may attempt to sow doubt and discouragement in the heart. Yet the believer knows that Allah’s wisdom is perfect and that His promise never fails.

Another important lesson of the Hijrah is that Muslims should not rush the results.

Allah the Almighty says: “The command of Allah has come, so do not seek to hasten it.” (Qur’an 16:1)

The verse uses the past tense to emphasize certainty. What Allah has decreed will undoubtedly occur, even if people perceive it as delayed.

Therefore, Allah commands patience, perseverance, and steadfastness while promising His support to those who fear Him and do good.

One common mistake is to misuse belief in divine decree as an excuse for laziness and inactivity. The correct understanding was beautifully demonstrated by Umar ibn al-Khattab (radiya lláhu ʻanhu). When he decided to return from the Levant because of a plague outbreak, someone asked him: “Are you fleeing from Allah’s decree?”

He replied: “We are fleeing from Allah’s decree to Allah’s decree.”

Taking precautions is itself part of Allah’s decree, just as the outcomes are part of His decree.

For this reason, the Prophet (salla lláhu ʻalayhi wa sallam) instructed us:

“Be keen on that which benefits you, seek the help of Allah, and do not give up.”

The true believer combines determination with reliance upon Allah, planning with trust, action with contentment, and effort with faith.

The Hijrah teaches us that genuine reliance upon Allah is not passivity or laziness. Rather, it is a heart firmly attached to Allah while the limbs work tirelessly in obedience to Him. Once every effort has been made, the believer accepts Allah’s decree with peace and contentment.

If you have done everything within your ability and exerted your utmost effort, yet the outcome is not what you hoped for, then know with certainty that Allah has chosen for you what is better and more beneficial.

For this reason, the believers have always proclaimed: “Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best Disposer of affairs.” (Qur’an 3:173)

Allah alone is sufficient for His servants. He knows what is best for them, manages their affairs with perfect wisdom and justice, and showers them with mercy.

We ask Allah the Almighty to grant us sincere reliance upon Him, proper utilization of the means He has provided, steadfastness upon the truth, patience during trials, and certainty in His promise. We ask Him to make the coming Hijri year a year of blessing, guidance, unity, and success for Islam and the Muslims.

Indeed, He is All-Powerful over all things, Most Generous, and Ever Responsive to the supplications of His servants.

Ameen.

Friday khutba – 12 June 2026 (26 Dhul-Hijjah 1447 AH) The Prophetic Hijrah: Balancing Trust in Allah with Action and Effort All praise is due to Allah.
