According to astronomical calculations, the beginning of the new Hijri year falls on Tuesday, 16 June 2026.

The Hijrah was far more than a journey from one city to another. It marked a decisive turning point that changed the course of Islamic history and laid the foundations for the growth of the Muslim community. For thirteen years, Muslims in Makkah endured persecution, oppression, and hardship. They faced social and economic boycotts, many suffered abuse and torture, and numerous families were deprived of their wealth and security because of their faith.

Several major events preceded the Hijrah. Among them were the prolonged boycott of Muslims in the Valley of Abu Talib, the death of the Prophet’s uncle Abu Talib, and the passing of his beloved wife Khadijah (radhia llahu anha). This difficult period became known as the Year of Sorrow. It was followed by the Prophet’s journey to Ta’if, where he was rejected and subjected to humiliation and physical attacks.

A new hope emerged from Madinah, whose people accepted Islam and offered their support and protection to the Prophet (salla lláhu ʻalayhi wa sallam). Following the Pledges of Al-Aqabah, Muslims were granted permission to migrate, and in 622 CE the historic Hijrah to Madinah took place.

In Madinah, a new chapter of Islamic history began. The first Islamic society and state were established, bonds of brotherhood were formed between the Muhajirun (Emigrants) and the Ansar (Helpers), and Islam began to spread with renewed strength and confidence. From Madinah came the key events that strengthened the Muslim community and paved the way for the spread of Islam far beyond the Arabian Peninsula.

During the caliphate of Umar ibn Al-Khattab (radhia llahu anhu), the need arose for a unified calendar to regulate official correspondence and state affairs. The Companions discussed several important events that could serve as the starting point of the Islamic calendar. They unanimously chose the Hijrah, as it symbolized the transition from persecution to security, from weakness to strength, and from a small community of believers to a flourishing civilization.

Although the Hijrah took place in 622 CE, it was officially adopted as the beginning of the Islamic calendar during the rule of Caliph Umar (radhia llahu anhu). Since then, all Hijri years have been counted from this historic event.

The arrival of a new Hijri year should be more than a change of date. It is an opportunity for reflection, self-improvement, and renewal. The Hijrah reminds us of timeless values: faith, patience, sacrifice, courage, trust in Allah, and the importance of striving for what is right while making responsible use of all available means.

As we welcome the year 1448 AH, may it bring peace, blessings, stability, and prosperity to people everywhere. We pray for good health, success, and Allah’s guidance for all on the path of faith, righteousness, and noble deeds.

Blessed Hijri Year 1448 AH

As Muslims around the world welcome the year 1448 AH, they commemorate one of the most remarkable events in Islamic history: the Hijrah, the migration of Prophet Muhammad (salla lláhu ʻalayhi wa sallam) from Makkah to Madinah.
