With the arrival of the new academic year, millions of students, pupils, and teachers return to their desks, textbooks, and classrooms. In today\u2019s secular and fast-paced world, this moment is often viewed primarily through a pragmatic lens\u2014as the beginning of another phase of formal education, preparation for a future career, or a mere obligation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
From the perspective of Qur’anic tradition and classical Islamic spirituality, however, the process of learning carries a far deeper, sacred dimension. Every open book, every hour spent solving a complex problem, and every step taken in pursuit of knowledge carries the echo of the very first message sent down to humanity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When the Prophet Muhammad (may God bless him and grant him peace) was in seclusion in the cave of Hira, the initial command he received was not to pray, fast, or perform pilgrimage. The first word conveyed to the Prophet by the Angel Jibril (Gabriel) was an uncompromising imperative:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\u201cRead!\u201d<\/strong> (Iqra\u2019<\/em>)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
The subsequent verses of the initial revealed surah, Al-\u2018Alaq<\/em> (96:1\u20135), immediately link the act of acquiring knowledge with the Creator:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\u201cRead in the name of your Lord who created, created man from a clinging clot! Read, for your Lord is the Most Generous, Who taught by the pen, taught man what he did not know.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
Here lies the cornerstone of the Islamic view of education: God introduces Himself to humanity not only as the Creator, but also as the First Teacher, who endowed humans with the ability to write with the pen (al-qalam<\/em>) and acquire hitherto unknown knowledge. In this view, education is not a mere civilizational advantage\u2014it is a primary religious duty and the fulfillment of the purpose of human intellect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
2. Transforming the Study Desk into a Place of Worship (\u2018Ib\u0101dah<\/em>)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
In classical Islamic understanding, there is no sharp boundary between so-called “religious” and “secular” knowledge. Any branch of learning that uncovers the laws of the universe, the human body, history, or language is an exploration of the Creator\u2019s work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Prophetic tradition clearly establishes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\u201cSeeking knowledge (talab al-\u2018ilm) is an obligation upon every Muslim.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
The key to transforming daily study into a spiritual act lies in pure intention (Niyyah<\/em>)<\/strong>. A famous Prophetic Hadith from Sahih al-Bukhari reminds us that \u201cactions are judged only by intentions.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
If a student approaches their education not out of habit or a desire for pride and titles, but with the intention to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n
- cultivate the intellect entrusted to them as a trust (am\u0101nah<\/em>),<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- dispel their own ignorance and be of benefit to their family and society,<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- better understand the light of truth and the laws of the world,<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
then every minute spent over a textbook becomes a continuous act of worship (\u2018ib\u0101dah<\/em>). Hours spent preparing for exams then hold the same spiritual weight in the eyes of tradition as voluntary night prayers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
3. Knowledge That Yields Humility (Khashyah<\/em>)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
True knowledge (\u2018ilm<\/em>) in the Qur’anic framework does not lead to intellectual arrogance or feeling superior to others. On the contrary\u2014the more one learns about the depth and complexity of the microscopic and macroscopic world, the more one realizes the limits of human reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Qur’an describes this state clearly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\u201cIt is only those who have knowledge among His servants that fear \/ revere God.\u201d<\/em> (Qur’an 35:28)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
The term used here is khashyah<\/em>\u2014which is not a paralyzing fear, but a profound, informed reverence and awe before the majesty of the Creator. A person who deeply understands natural laws, medicine, or physics sees a flawless order behind these processes. Thus, study does not wither the heart, but softens it and instills inner humility (khush\u016b\u2018<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Prophet used to pray: \u201cO God, I seek refuge in You from knowledge that does not benefit and from a heart that does not humble itself.\u201d<\/em> Knowledge without a spiritual dimension is merely the accumulation of data; knowledge joined with noble intention becomes light (n\u016br<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
4. How to Enter the New Academic Year<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
The start of the school year thus offers believers an opportunity for an inner reset. Instead of feeling weighed down by upcoming obligations, one can shift perspective:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n
- Renewing Intention (Tajd\u012bd an-niyyah<\/em>):<\/strong> Before opening the first book or entering the classroom, mentally remind yourself for whom and why this effort is being made.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- Praying for Understanding:<\/strong> The Qur’an teaches believers a supplication that the Prophet repeated: \u201cRabbi zidn\u012b \u2018ilm\u0101\u201d<\/em> \u2014 \u201cMy Lord, increase me in knowledge!\u201d<\/em> (Qur’an 20:114).<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- Patience in Hardship (Sabr<\/em>):<\/strong> The effort required to overcome difficult subjects is seen as a purification of the mind and a training of the will. Acquiring knowledge demands time and discipline.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
Every classroom, lecture hall, or study room can thus become a place where, through understanding the world, a person draws closer to their Creator. Education is not merely a means of earning a living, but a noble journey where every step carries invisible weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Qur’anic and Prophetic Supplications for Knowledge, Focus, and Ease in Study<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Spiritual preparation before studying consists of combining human effort with supplication (du\u2018\u0101\u2019<\/em>). In Islamic tradition, praying for knowledge is an acknowledgment that true understanding and mental clarity are gifts from the Creator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
