With a heart full of grief, he journeyed to the mountainous town of at-Ta’if. He hoped that its people would listen to his message of unity, peace, and spiritual awakening.

Instead of acceptance, he was met with profound rejection. The town’s leaders incited a mob against him. People threw stones at him until, wounded and exhausted, he was forced to flee beyond the city limits.

Physically broken, he sought refuge in the shade of one of the vineyards. There was no crowd, no followers, no outward success. There was only him, his pain, and the silence.

At that moment, he did not turn to heaven in anger or plead for revenge. Instead, he recited a prayer that became one of the most beautiful texts of Islamic mysticism:

“O God, to You alone I complain of my weakness, my lack of strength, and my helplessness before people. You are the Most Merciful of those who show mercy… If You are not angry with me, then nothing else matters to me. Yet Your forgiveness is the greatest refuge for me.”

This moment represents the purest core of spirituality: recognizing one’s own vulnerability and surrendering it to a Higher Will. The Prophet ﷺ did not seek outward salvation or victory over his enemies — he sought only reassurance that his inner intention and heart remained pure.

According to tradition, at that moment the owners of the orchard — though themselves non-believers — sent their Christian slave, Addas, to bring him a bunch of grapes. When Muhammad ﷺ reached out his hand and said, “Bismillah” (“In the name of God”), Addas stopped in surprise, because these words were not used by anyone in that region. The brief yet profound conversation that followed brought two spiritual souls together in the midst of a desolate situation.

The Spiritual Meaning for Today

This story offers several timeless insights:

The willingness to be vulnerable: True spiritual strength does not lie in being invulnerable or in constant victory, but in the ability to come before God (or turn inward) with one’s own weakness and pain.

Detachment from the outcome: In his prayer, the Prophet ﷺ does not ask, “Why have You done this to me?” Instead, he reassures himself: “If my heart remains aligned with You, nothing else matters.”

Light in small gestures: Even in the darkest moment, a spark of humanity can appear — a bunch of grapes from a stranger and a brief moment of understanding.

In the year that tradition calls the Year of Sorrow, Muhammad ﷺ lost his wife Khadijah, who had been his greatest source of support, as well as his uncle Abu Talib, who had protected him from his enemies.
