Imbalance and False Standards<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n All praise is due to Allah. We worship Him, seek His help, and ask for His guidance. I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah alone, and I bear witness that Muhammad (salla ll\u00e1hu \u02bbalayhi wa sallam) is His servant and Messenger. Allah Almighty says: \u201cO you who believe! Fear Allah and speak words of truth and justice. He will set right your deeds for you and forgive you your sins. Whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has indeed achieved a great triumph.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n One of the greatest blessings Allah has given us is a clear standard by which we can judge matters and distinguish truth from falsehood and right from wrong. Allah Almighty says: \u201cHe raised the heaven and established the balance, so that you may not transgress in the balance. Weigh with justice and do not give short measure<\/strong>.\u201d(Qur\u2019an 55:7\u20139)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n The balance represents justice, truth, and fairness\u2014the principles by which human life should be guided. When our moral values and standards become distorted, the consequences are far more serious than any physical imbalance, because such distortion corrupts both the individual and society. Allah Almighty says: \u201cIndeed, We sent Our messengers with clear proofs, and We sent down with them the Scripture and the balance so that people may uphold justice.\u201d<\/strong> (Qur\u2019an 57:25)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n When this balance is lost, falsehood may be presented as truth and truth dismissed as falsehood. People who do not deserve recognition may be elevated, while wealth, fame, status, and outward appearance become the standards by which a person\u2019s worth is measured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Prophet Muhammad (salla ll\u00e1hu \u02bbalayhi wa sallam) warned of a time when standards would be turned upside down. He said that years of deception would come upon people: the liar would be believed, the truthful person would be disbelieved, the treacherous person would be trusted, the trustworthy person would be regarded as treacherous, and the Ruwaybidah would speak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When he was asked who the Ruwaybidah were, he explained that they were insignificant or unqualified people who would speak about public affairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Today, we can see many examples of such imbalance. Lies may be presented as truth, falsehood may be disguised as fact, and people may be admired simply because they are wealthy or famous, while people of knowledge, integrity, and good character are overlooked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This should lead each of us to ask an important question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n By what standard do I judge people and the matters of my life? By the standard of Allah and the truth, or by the standards of society, fame, wealth, and public opinion?<\/p>\n\n\n\n One of the causes of imbalance is haste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Allah Almighty says:\u201cMan was created of haste<\/strong>.\u201d (Qur\u2019an 21:37)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n We see this haste when people rush to judge others, believe rumours, or spread information without first verifying whether it is true. We also see it in major decisions concerning marriage, divorce, education, and employment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A person may make an important decision in a moment of anger, excitement, fear, or emotional pressure, only to live with its consequences for many years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For this reason, patience, careful reflection, and verification are essential if we wish to maintain balance in our lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Another cause of imbalance is judging people according to material standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Some people have begun to measure their own worth by how much money they have, what job they hold, where they live, what car they drive, how well known they are, or how many followers they have on social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But Allah\u2019s standard is different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A person\u2019s true worth is not determined by wealth, family background, physical beauty, social position, or fame. True worth lies in faith, righteousness, good character, and good deeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n One of the clearest lessons concerning this can be found in Surah \u02bfAbasa, the eightieth chapter of the Qur\u2019an.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Abdullah ibn Umm Maktum (radhia llahu nahu) was a blind man who came seeking knowledge. Allah Almighty revealed: \u201cHe frowned and turned away because the blind man came to him. And what could make you know? Perhaps he might be purified, or be reminded, and the reminder might benefit him.<\/strong>\u201d (Qur\u2019an 80:1\u20134)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n This teaches us an important lesson: a person does not become more valuable because he is wealthy or holds an important position, nor does he become less valuable because he is poor, weak, or disabled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The same imbalance can also appear when people choose a spouse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Some may place wealth, beauty, family background, or social position above faith and character. Yet the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught that a woman may be married for four reasons: her wealth, her family status, her beauty, and her religion, and he encouraged choosing the one who is committed to her faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Wealth, beauty, and family background may have their place, but faith and good character should remain the most important considerations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Another false standard is judging people by their outward appearance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Allah Almighty says: \u201cIndeed, the most honoured of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you.\u201d<\/strong> (Qur\u2019an 49:13)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n When some of the Companions laughed at the thin legs of Abdullah ibn Mas\u02bfud (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) reminded them that those legs would weigh more heavily in the balance than Mount Uhud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The lesson is clear: a person\u2019s true value is not found in physical appearance, but in faith, character, and righteous deeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Another cause of imbalance is blind conformity and pressure from society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Allah Almighty says: \u201cIndeed, we found our forefathers following a certain way, and we are following in their footsteps<\/strong>.\u201d (Qur\u2019an 43:23)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n The same attitude can be heard today in phrases such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cEveryone does it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThat is simply how things are done.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWhat will people say?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Fear of what others may think can lead a person to act against his or her own convictions, religious principles, and moral values.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Social pressure can also lead people into extravagance and debt simply to maintain appearances. It can lead them to imitate celebrities and influencers blindly\u2014not only in clothing and appearance, but also in lifestyle, ideas, attitudes, and values.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There is nothing wrong with learning from others. The problem begins when we surrender our own judgment and start treating fame as a measure of truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Fame does not turn falsehood into truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Having millions of followers does not automatically make someone a good example to follow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n An idea does not become correct simply because it is popular.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And falsehood does not become truth simply because many people accept or follow it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Maintaining the correct balance therefore requires us to return to the Qur\u2019an and the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). It requires us to think carefully before judging others or making important decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We must not make wealth, appearance, social status, or fame the measure of a person\u2019s worth. Instead, we should give priority to faith, righteousness, good character, and good deeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The greatest danger facing a society is not merely that some individuals become corrupt. An even greater danger arises when society\u2019s standards themselves become corrupted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When the balance is distorted, dishonesty may be praised as cleverness, superficiality may be mistaken for success, and extravagance may be regarded as prestige. A person with wealth, fame, and an impressive outward appearance may then be valued more highly than someone who possesses knowledge, wisdom, honesty, and good character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For this reason, we should reconsider our priorities\u2014in choosing our friends, choosing a spouse, raising our children, judging other people, managing our money, following celebrities and influencers, and defining what success and failure truly mean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not everything that appears great in the eyes of people is great in the sight of Allah, and not everyone who appears insignificant in the eyes of people is insignificant in the sight of Allah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We should therefore keep asking ourselves:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Am I judging the matters of my life according to Allah\u2019s standard, or according to the standards of people?<\/p>\n\n\n\n O Allah, show us the truth as truth and grant us the strength to follow it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Show us falsehood as falsehood and grant us the strength to stay away from it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Make Your Book and the guidance of Your Prophet (salla ll\u00e1hu \u02bbalayhi wa sallam) a light by which we are guided and a standard by which we judge the affairs of our lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ameen.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Friday Khutbah \u2013 25 September 2026 (14 Rabi\u02bf al-Thani 1448 AH) Imbalance and False Standards All praise is due to Allah.
