We worship Him and seek His help. I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad (salla lláhu ʻalayhi wa sallam) is His servant and Messenger. “O you who believe, fear Allah and speak words of truth and justice. He will guide you to righteous deeds and forgive you your sins. Whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has indeed achieved a great success.”

One of the surahs of the Qur’an that addresses real problems in society is Surah Al-Mutaffifin (“Those Who Give Less Than Due”, Surah 83).

Cheating is not limited to giving people less in weight or measure. Its meaning is much broader. It also describes the attitude of someone who demands his own rights in full while failing to give others what is rightfully due to them.

Allah Almighty says: “Woe to those who give less than due, who, when they take a measure from people, take in full, but when they give by measure or weight to others, they give less than what is due.” (83:1–3)

We can see this attitude in many areas of our lives today.

1. In our relationship with Allah

We ask Allah for health, provision, protection, answered prayers and continuous blessings. Yet at the same time, we may neglect our prayers, obedience to Allah, respect for our parents and the duties that Allah has placed upon us.

We may ask for forgiveness without sincere repentance, seek blessings without obedience, or expect our prayers to be answered without making the effort that is required from us.

We should not expect to receive Allah’s blessings in full while neglecting our duties towards Him or fulfilling them only partially.

Allah Almighty says: “And among the people are those who worship Allah on the edge. If something good comes to them, they are content with it; but if they are faced with a trial, they turn away. They lose both this world and the Hereafter. That is truly the clear loss.”
(22:11)

2. In our dealings with others

We expect attention, care and support from other people, yet when they need us, we may fail to give them the same in return.

A buyer, for example, may exaggerate the faults of something in order to lower its price. Yet when the same person becomes a seller, he may downplay those very faults in order to obtain a higher price.

True fairness means applying the same standard whether the truth is in our favour or against us.

3. Within the family

One spouse may demand that all of his or her rights be respected while failing to fulfil their own responsibilities towards the other.

Parents may expect complete obedience from their children while neglecting some of their children’s rights. Children, on the other hand, may forget the kindness and sacrifices of their parents and focus only on their mistakes.

The same imbalance appears when, during an argument, we forget all the good that someone has done and magnify every mistake they have made.

Justice means treating others as we ourselves would wish to be treated. It also means remaining fair even towards those with whom we disagree.

4. In our responsibilities towards society and the state

A person may insist on receiving every right and benefit available to them, yet when it comes to fulfilling their own responsibilities, they may look for ways to avoid them.

This can include tax fraud, giving false information in order to receive benefits to which one is not entitled, failing to work the required hours, dealing with personal matters during working hours, claiming more hours than were actually worked, or taking sick leave without a genuine reason.

Other examples include travelling on public transport without buying a ticket simply because there is no ticket inspector, or taking advantage of someone’s limited knowledge of the law or the language in order to deny them their rights.

Another example is when we strongly condemn injustice and discrimination when we ourselves are affected, but remain silent when the same injustice happens to someone else.

A modern-day cheater, therefore, is not necessarily a merchant who cheats with weights and measures.

It can be anyone who uses two different standards: a strict standard when it comes to their own rights, and a more lenient one when it comes to the rights of others.

When receiving, they demand everything in full; when giving, they are satisfied with giving less.

Each of us should therefore examine ourselves and ask: Do I use the same measure when I receive as I do when I give?

A society cannot improve simply by everyone demanding their rights. It improves when rights are accompanied by responsibilities, and when we apply the same standards to ourselves that we expect from others.

O Allah, purify our hearts from injustice and dishonesty. Grant us justice and fairness. Help us to fulfil our duties towards You and towards Your servants, and make us among those who are honest and trustworthy. Ameen.

Friday Khutbah – 2 October 2026 (21 Rabiʿ al-Thani 1448 AH) Modern-Day Forms of Cheating Praise be to Allah.
