The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and Abu Bakr first headed south, toward Mount Thawr, even though Medina lay to the north. They spent three nights in a small cave while the Quraysh searched the surrounding area. This hiding place was not a strategic retreat in the ordinary sense. It was a moment in which it became clear what trust means when almost nothing else remains.

The Qur’an captures this moment in Surah at-Tawbah: “If you do not aid him, Allah has already aided him when those who disbelieved had driven him out [of Mecca] as one of two, when they were in the cave and he said to his companion, ‘Do not grieve; indeed Allah is with us.’ And Allah sent down His tranquility upon him and supported him with soldiers you did not see and made the word of those who disbelieved the lowest, while the word of Allah is the highest. And Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise.” (9:40). The verse is concise and precise. It does not recount the preparations, the price on the Prophet’s head, or how close the pursuers came. It focuses on the words spoken inside the cave and on what followed them.

According to authentic reports, the searchers stood right at the entrance. Abu Bakr was worried. He said that if one of them looked under his feet, he would see them. The Prophet’s reply was: “What do you think of two, the third of whom is Allah?” (Sahih al-Bukhari). At that moment it was not a matter of theoretical faith. It was a concrete situation in which human possibilities had been exhausted and only the certainty remained that Allah’s presence does not depend on visible forces.

This certainty has a precise distinction in Islam. Allah is with creation in a general sense—through His knowledge, power, and encompassing. With the believers, however, He is also present in a special way: through support, protection, and the tranquility He sends down. The verse speaks of this second kind. It does not say that the danger ceased to exist. It says that Allah is with them, and then describes what followed: the descent of sakīnah and unseen support. Calm did not come before trust. It came as a response to it.

Herein lies the spiritual weight of that moment. The Prophet did not deny the reality of the threat. He did not tell Abu Bakr that nothing would happen. He told him not to grieve, because Allah is with them. The difference is essential. Grief here is not mere sadness, but a state in which a person loses connection with what is truly decisive. The response is not the suppression of feelings, but their anchoring in something that transcends the immediate situation. Abu Bakr feared for the Prophet, not for himself. The Prophet answered with a certainty that did not depend on whether they would be seen or not.

This certainty did not rest on numbers or weapons. It rested on a relationship. The One who had commanded them to leave was present even in the moment when leaving looked like flight. The Qur’an later recalls this moment in the context of the Tabuk campaign, when some hesitated. It reminds them that Allah had already helped the Prophet at a time when he was “one of two.” Help did not come because he had an army. It came because Allah was with him.

For a person who finds himself in a situation where everything seems to depend on his own strength, this story has concrete significance. The deepest form of trust does not appear when circumstances confirm that everything will turn out well. It appears when circumstances confirm nothing of the kind, and yet the person remains rooted in the awareness that he is not alone. The Cave of Thawr is not a place of miraculous escape in the popular sense. It is a place where it became clear that Allah’s presence is not conditioned by visible results. The results came later. First there was certainty.

It is precisely this sequence that makes the moment a spiritual measure. It is not about whether a person feels fear. It is about whether, in the moment of fear, he remains anchored in what is greater than fear. The Prophet expressed it in the cave simply and precisely. Do not grieve, for Allah is with us. And from this sentence everything else followed.

When they decided to leave Mecca, they did not take the shortest route.
