Insight (Basīrah): The Light of the Heart and a Guide on the Straight Path

All praise is due to Allah. We praise Him, seek His help and forgiveness, and bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah alone, and that Muhammad ((salla lláhu ʻalayhi wa sallam) is His servant and Messenger.

Allah, the Exalted, says: “O you who believe! Fear Allah and speak words of truth and righteousness. He will rectify your deeds and forgive you your sins. Whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has indeed achieved a great success.”

One of Allah’s greatest blessings upon His servants is the gift of basīrah (spiritual insight). It is the light of the heart through which a believer distinguishes truth from falsehood, guidance from misguidance, and right from wrong. While the eyes perceive the outward appearance of things, insight enables a person to understand their true reality.

A person may possess perfect eyesight yet lack spiritual insight, while another may lose his physical sight but have a heart illuminated with faith. For this reason, the scholars described basīrah as a light that Allah places in the heart of His servant, guiding him to the truth.

Allah, the Almighty, says: “Indeed, it is not the eyes that are blind, but it is the hearts within the chests that become blind.” (Qur’an 22:46)

True blindness is the blindness of the heart. When a person loses spiritual insight, truth becomes confused with falsehood, and good may appear evil while evil appears good.

Allah has made revelation the greatest source of wisdom. He says: “These are clear insights from your Lord, and guidance and mercy for a people who believe.” (Qur’an 7:203)

The closer a Muslim draws to the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), the more his heart is filled with light and guidance.

We live in an age of confusion and countless temptations, where ideas overlap and many people can no longer distinguish truth from falsehood. Today, we need spiritual insight more than ever before. It protects the believer from being deceived by appearances and empty slogans, enabling him to judge matters wisely and consider their consequences.

Allah says: “Is one who walks fallen on his face better guided, or one who walks upright upon a straight path?” (Qur’an 67:22)

Among the fruits of spiritual insight are a stronger relationship with one’s Lord, a deeper understanding of the religion, and the tranquility and steadfastness needed during times of hardship.

Servants of Allah,

Among the greatest causes of weakened insight is placing human reason above divine revelation, making the intellect the judge over the revealed texts. Islam honours the intellect and values it greatly, but it is meant to understand revelation—not to stand above it.

Other causes include blind imitation, following people without evidence, relying solely on worldly means while forgetting their Creator, spreading ignorance, speaking about Allah’s religion without knowledge, and judging matters superficially without considering their consequences.

There are many ways to strengthen spiritual insight, foremost among them being taqwā (God-consciousness).

Allah, the Exalted, says:

“O you who believe! If you fear Allah, He will grant you a criterion by which to distinguish between right and wrong.” (Qur’an 8:29)

Other means include striving against one’s own desires, faithfully observing the obligatory acts of worship, increasing voluntary prayers, ensuring that one’s food, drink, and earnings are lawful, placing sincere trust in Allah, and having unwavering faith in His promise.

Likewise, understanding Allah’s divine laws governing life and creation deepens the believer’s insight. He realizes that truth may be tested, but it will never perish; falsehood may appear strong for a time, but it cannot endure; and the final victory belongs to those who are mindful of Allah.

Servants of Allah,

How greatly we need today the light of spiritual insight, beneficial knowledge, and a sound understanding of Allah’s religion, so that we may recognize the truth as truth and follow it, recognize falsehood as falsehood and avoid it, and remain firm in the face of trials without being deceived by outward appearances.

O Allah, illuminate our hearts with faith, bless us with spiritual insight, show us the truth as truth and grant us the ability to follow it, show us falsehood as falsehood and grant us the strength to avoid it. Indeed, You are the All-Hearing, the Ever-Responsive.
